This morning, I came across a story about Amanda Lindhout who spent time trying to deliver food to the starving in Samalia, only to end up in a Samalian prison for some 400 days. After she was released, she returned to her home in Canada. Well, now she is back in Samalia to continue her mission to fight famine. I find her amazing. Before this morning, I had never heard her name, but 30 minutes into my morning... I'm in awe of her. 29,000 children have died, that makes me weak. It makes me stop.

This post isn't to urge anyone to load up and go to Africa. There are daily opprotunities to help people in the city you live in. This summer has really given me a wake-up call and has awakened a passion in me that I wasn't aware of before. By working at a non-profit organization that helps women for just one short month, I've been able to see from a closer prospective just how many people need help from others.
I've been bitter at times, because sometimes helping others up puts you in a vulnerable place and people take advantage. I like to think that this is the exception, not the rule. I've never seen people so grateful for things that other people didn't think twice about tossing out while cleaning closets, or tearfully departing with because they were remnants of a loved one.
"Everyone needs help sometimes" is a quote I see everyday on the way home. It's painted on a sign that a man holds as he stands under an overpass trying to escape from the brutal heat. We can't save the world or even one person in a day, but day by day we can begin to make a difference.
